5 Days Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee & Hiking Safari

Take a 5-day safari to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest forests, for a cool vibe and an unforgettable experience. The park is located close to the border with the DR Congo and near the shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest body of water. In addition to chimpanzee trekking in the vast Nyungwe forest, this package includes nature walks, birdwatching, photography, canopy walk, and other interesting activities.

This is a road trip with carefully considered lodging options in and near the park. One of the varieties of free-hanging canopy seen on the continent of East Africa is in the Nyungwe forest. On it, you may feel the brisk breeze, admire the breathtaking scenery, and recognize a wide range of plants and fauna. Pickup and drop-off occur at the predetermined location.

Rwanda is a safe country to visit. Especially if you want to join organised game drives with private guides, as you will do with us. There are, of course, some places to avoid in big cities like Kigali. But – as with everywhere else in the world – you’ll be fine by taking some precautions. Just some examples to be on the safe side (pun intended): don’t explore the city at night without a driver or guide, keep your valuables close to you, avoid wearing big and visible jewellery and leave some things like passports in the hotel safe.

This is an exclusive, private safari that allows you to travel at your own pace. This trip is made just for you, exactly as you want it! Our experienced travel consultants will make sure that your wishes come true. There are numerous advantages to such a trip. First, you can cruise around in a private safari vehicle and have a personal guide. It’s completely up to you what time you leave in the morning and when you come back (taking into account your guide’s advice, of course). Secondly, once you’re in a national park, you can observe specific animals or herds for as long as you like. No one will push you to move along. And lastly, knowing your wishes, your personal guide will give you the right tips, turning your trip into an unforgettable experience.

At Jeresh Africa Safaris, we’re all about co-creating your perfect journey. When you plan your African adventures with us, you’re not just booking a trip; you’re embarking on a personalised experience. We start by understanding your wishes and preferences, and we won’t stop until every aspect of your journey aligns perfectly with your vision. Our team works closely with you to ensure that your entire trip is tailor-made to your satisfaction. And for added convenience, we offer a selection of our most popular African tours and safaris as a starting point for your consideration.

Itinerary

Take a 5-day safari to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest forests, for a cool vibe and an unforgettable experience. The park is located close to the border with the DR Congo and near the shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest body of water. In addition to chimpanzee trekking in the vast Nyungwe forest, this package includes nature walks, birdwatching, photography, canopy walk, and other interesting activities.

Day 1:

Explore Kigali city

You will be welcomed to the land of a thousand hills by the calm, quiet, gorgeous landscape and pleasant people as soon as you land in Kigali City. The guide will introduce themselves and go over what the safari has to offer before starting the city tours in Kigali.

You will stop at a few sites as you discover culture, history and people in one of Africa’s cleanest and safest cities. Kigali Genocide Memorial Site, as well as city landmarks, local markets and museums. After lunch in the city, you’ll head back to the hotel for dinner and a restful siesta

Day 2:

Kigali city to Nyungwe forest

After breakfast, depart for Nyungwe National Park from the lovely city of Kigali. With a break for refreshments along the way, the trip should take 4-5 hours. The driver will choose a perfect location where you can stop and get photographic experience.

You will traverse through rural regions with rolling hills, homesteads and populated towns. After a lunch break enroute, arrive late at your lodge, where you will spend the night and end the day.

Day 3:

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park

After breakfast, go visit your relatives in the jungle where they live, dress up in a trekking outfit, choose a packed lunch and gather other items you’ll need for trekking. The ranger guide will be present to clarify whatever you need to know prior to the excursion at the park headquarters.

You must be physically fit to complete the hike to and from the chimpanzees successfully. Over 98% of the chimpanzees’ traits and instincts resemble those of humans. After the tour, everyone who hears them is forced to emulate their more than 25 vocals, each of which has a particular meaning.

Approximately 2-3 hours are spent trekking with chimpanzees, plus an additional hour is allotted for taking photos and learning about their features. You will come across other primates than chimp nests, like the white and black Colobus monkeys, among others. Lunch is served following the trekking activity, and after the tour, there is an optional to just relax. This day will end with dinner and then you’ll go to bed.

Day 4:

Nature walk and canopy walk adventure

After a cup of tea, get this day’s activity started. The first activity is a nature walk along the authorized trail path, which will introduce you to a range of botany bird species, stunning scenery, photo possibilities and more. The events last for roughly two to three hours.

A lunch break comes after a fruitful morning activity, and then there is that one amazing moment at the forest canopy, with cameras set up, forest lovers describing all happenings in the forest, and more. You have a chance to see primates like monkeys and birds in the treetops as well as take in the spectacular views of mother nature. Dinner and an overnight stay in the woods mark the end of your day.

Day 5:

Departure

Check out of your nature lodge following sunrise breakfast and depart to the prearranged drop off location in Kigali. You will stop at Nyanza Palace enroute to learn about Rwandan culture, including music, storytelling and traditional dances, as well as sampling local cuisine.

The driver guide will then drop you off at the designated drop-off location where you can wait for a flight or continue on to your next destination.
